Информация о объекте
The Hermitage consists of five magnificent buildings along the banks of the river Neva in the centre of St Petersburg. They are the Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Large Hermitage, New Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre. Part of the Museum’s collection is held in the Palace of Prince Alexander Menshikov and in the building of the former Imperial Army General Staff on Palace Square. Once the official residence of the Russian tsars, the Winter Palace was designed by the architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli and was built between 1754 and 1762. It is the focal point of the Hermitage complex.
The Hermitage houses one of the world’s largest art collections. There are some three million artworks, including masterpieces by renowned artists. The collection includes objects from the Stone Age to the present day.
The Russian royal families were closely linked with the Hermitage. Artists of the day decorated the rooms according to the tastes and wishes of the reigning monarch. New artworks were collected to expand Catherine the Great’s original collection. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Hermitage became a museum, giving the public access to the treasures inside.
